Second Generation
2. Bresal was born in Ui Maine Ireland.
It isn't clear what the borders of Ui Maine might have been in that
time. I suspect they began at the Irish Sea somewhere around and
likely including Dundalk and extended all the way west to the sea at
Galway.
Rick O'Kelley - My
DNA results indicate that maybe 45 generations + or - 5 generations ago
I share a grandfather with the O'Kellys of Hy-Many indicating that my
ancestor Aedh Slaine the 141st Monarch of Ireland was a descendant of
Maine Mor and not Niall of Nine. It seems likely that one of
these grandsons of Maine Mor was like the great grandfather of Aedh
Slaine. The mostly likely candidate in my opinion would be Conall
and that is based upon my DNA matches to the McGonnells who I feel
certain were The "Tigh-Chonaill or "Sta-Gonnell" means
"House of Gonnell" given in the Irish Annals in the 700s AD living
in what became the Barony of Rathdown just southwest of Dublin.
Clearly this is a very old religious order. I believe that in the
time of 1st Earl of Tyrone Conn O'Neill when the Catholic houses were
suppressed that the Sta-Gonnell being a religious house fled to Tyrone
and build the Castle Ardgonnell on the River Corr near this union with
River Blackwater as Ulster was the only place in Ireland at that time
where Catholic houses were protected from the English. Most Irish
Castles were religious houses with defensive walls. I suspect that
those who came to call themselves McGonnell lived and farmed around the
Castle and when the 2nd Earl of Tyrone Hugh "O'Kelley" O Neill died in
exile that the McGonnell gave up their dream of Catholic restoration and
abandoned their religious house but remained farming around it and the
O'Neills took over the house and it became an the O'Neill Castle
Ardgonnell.
None of the grandsons can be ruled out.
